Smart Home Service Use among Older Adults Living Alone in Rural Areas

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the practical adaptation experiences that rural older adults in using pilot smart home services. To this end two focus group interviews were conducted with nine senior citizens living alone in highly-aged areas who received smart home services, a government-supported pilot project. Also, two separate focus group interviews were conducted with 11 key information providers related to the distribution and management of their smart home services. The grounded theory methodology by Strauss & Corbin (1998) was applied for the analysis.
Our analysis derived 84 concepts, 39 sub-categories, and 16 super-categories. In the paradigmic dimension, the central phenomenon was and , the causal condition of the central phenomenon was , and the contextual condition was , and the behavior/interaction strategies for controlling and coping with the central phenomenon was . The interventional situation was , and the result was . The core category of the smart home experience of the elderly living alone was determined to be ¡°Slowly but adapting to the smart home with the help of ¡®people¡¯¡±. Based on the main results, practical and policy implications are presented for the development of smart home technology based on elderly users and establishment of an efficient delivery system.
